Mr.Backee,
My deepest sympathy, I'm sorry for your loss. I hope you and your family can pull through. Always remember your second family is in Sargent waiting for you to come home. We got you :) through thick and thin. Hang your head high, not low. People come and go, just remember its part of life. I know how hard it is to lose someone so close to your heart. I've had it happen several times already. But what i learned is no matter what happens they'll still be here with us. Living in our hearts. Smile Backee :) It's what your brother and father in law would want. I know this is a bad time but Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you and your family! Love you Backee :) ♥

Dear Mr.Backe,
i know you've been going through the worst days of your life but we're all here to make you feel better. I know how bad it is to lose people that really meant everything to you. We're always here for you, just put your head up. Hope to see you back at school soon. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you and all your family.
God Bless,

Dear Mr.Backe,

I’m sorry to hear about the loss. I know it hurts to lose the ones who are really close to you. You have my deepest sympathies on the loss of your love ones. You know I’m for you anytime Mr.Backe. I hope you have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

Love,

Karen C :)

Dear Mr. Backe,

I know you’re going through some hard times right now, and you have my sympathy. I really hope it all gets better for you and that you’ll be able to return to Sargent Park to continue teaching. I know how it is to lose loved ones too, and it’s not easy. When I lost my grandpa in 2007 from cancer it took me a while to get over it, but in the end everything got better. All of the students from Sargent Park, current and former, are there for you.

I hope everything works out for the best,

Shawn Magierowski

Merry Christmas to All

Thank you the class. You have touched my heart and I miss you all. Your kind words have touched my heart. It is a very difficult time for my family and me. As you know, my father in law passed away last week, and on Tuesday when I was joking about going to the hospital to kick my brother, I found out he had passed away. I would much rather be with you then deal with losing a brother. I promise to try my best to smile and I will be back in the New Year. B ball team, we have some hard work ahead of us. See many of you soon. Hugs to all.

To Mr. Backe

Hello Mr. Backe! How are you doing? I hope you are doing well! We miss you a lot! Math class is different without you! Thank you, for being such a kind and awesome teacher to us. You're always there when we need help and I am very thankful for that! Thank you for giving us chocolates too! (: Anyways, I would like to wish you a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year~! See you next year Mr. Backe! :D

Here is a picture I drew for you!

Mr. B

Hello Mr. B! How are you doing? Hopefully you and your family are alright. We ( I mean "The Class") really miss you. Thank you for helping us excel in Math and continue to be "The Class".

You're really a wonderful teacher. Why? Because, even though we students make mistakes, you're alright with that. Also, you're the only teacher that actually keeps on praising us and calling us "The Class". Then, there's our noise level, we're loud, and you actually don't mind, as long as we're doing our work. You're really one of the best teachers we ever had.
We really hope you come back soon Mr. B. Math class is not the same without you. Also all the mornings spent in 9-05, just finishing our math homework, isn't the same either. I know that life isn't all that wonderful, but what comes are challenges. And we'll always be there for you.

Always think positive, and remember that there's always hope.

Happy Holidays.

Blogging for Mr. B :)

Friday, December 18, 2009
Hey there. As you can probably see, practically the whole class blogged especially for you! Doesn't this show how special you are to all of us? Well, I for one think so! You helped us grow not only as a student but as a person as well, and in such a short period of time too. I know a lot of times I make a lot of silly mistakes, but I'm glad you're always there to tell me where I'm going wrong. I sincerely hope that you'll be back to teach us all again soon because math class just isn't the same without you! We know that you're going through some emotional issues at this time, but you don't have to go through it alone. SPS is your #1 support team. Especially THE CLASS :) So of course we miss you! You've helped us out so much and it's only fair that we help you out! We wish you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

PS: Your mission for the holly days is to smile at least TEN times a day even if you aren't happy. Your smile makes someone else smile, and if you see someone smile, you'll smile, too :)

Mr. Backe

Hi Mr. Backe!

Like everyone else, we all miss you and hope you come back soon. You're an awesome teacher and everyone wishes you'd come back.

Haha, no seriously. You're the first teacher to actually praise us and keep praising us. You made us "The Class". I think other teachers thought we were bad students and they only think we're good students now because you said so. So come back soon!

Well for now, MERRY CHRISTMAS and HAPPY NEW YEAR! XD

For Mr. Backe

Hi Mr. Backe! I hope you are enjoying your holidays. We all miss you very much. You can tell because we're all making a post saying how much we miss you. You know people like you when they blog about it.

I miss you TTTTTTTTTHHHHHHHHHHIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIISSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS
much. Math just isn't the same without you ^-^. Well, we barely did any math, but it still wasn't the same. Anyway, I know things may be, different this year, but I hope we can hear you joking around once again. I know we all miss your jokes

Well sorry there's no picture (let's just focus on the care that went into this post). Well I wish you a merry christmaaaaaasss, and a haaappyyyy neeewww yeeaaaarr!!! (I tried to make it sound like the song.....)

\(>_<\) \(^_^)/ (/-_-)/

Mr.B

Hey Ralph, It's me, Zerlina! Now you hate of course.

Please come back, we miss you! I'm very sorry, and hopefully you are able to come back next year. I know your going through emotional changes, but that's life.

Math just doesn't work with out you so you have to come back. The CLASS needs you to succeed. Your an awesome teacher and we can get through this together (A message from the class). So when your back we'll be here for you.

Have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

Your best student Zerlina!

Hey Mr. Backe, it's me Dean, on late as usual. Haha :D
As you must already know by our many posts, we miss you. No doubt, even I miss you! We've all learned to look at you closer than a teacher. It's hard to not see you in class anymore, with all the jokes, the fooling around, the laughter that we enjoy when your teaching. We're the class, and to all of us, you are part of the class. We all stand strong as one family and no less. We know your going through tough times, but don't forget, we have your back 100%. No matter what life throws at us, we'll handle it together Mr. Backe, promise.

I remember the time near my lockers when you talked to me about my test. I know I told you I was going to get 100%, so I tried. Yet, the test was hard, especially for me. That being said, I know I can do better, with your teachings, with all your help, I want you to be there. I want you to be the one that grades my test, not a substitute. You see, your the one that teaches the class, there is no other. One day Mr. Backe, I will get that 100% like I promised you. But please, just be there to see it. (:

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year Mr. Backe, you deserve it.

Mr.Backe

Happy Holidays! Mr.Backe thank you for teaching us math this year and also im look forward to next year! Thank you for the time after school to teach me stuff that I dont know and don't get until like you explained it to me like 4 times! Your like the best math teacher I ever had. When you were gone it wasn't the same. No one was there to make fun of people and scold us because we got things wrong.

I hope you have a merry christmas!^^

Mr bakkeee

As you can see already from all the other post, we MISS YOU! :D, and class isn't as fun and I'm a bit wierded out by that because I hated taking notes but I actually kind of miss it. I give you my best wishes =P

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays!

"Cheer Up"
By: SaintJ

It gets tough to hang on.
You often feel like letting go.
You dont give a damn about the future,
And all the more tortures it holds.

But if you think about it a little,
Life also makes the pain worth living it.
So instead of cursing at life, I hope you can try forgiving it.

With every sunset,
Comes a sunrise.
A new ray of hope, Pleasing to the eyes.

You can only truly appreciate happiness,
By feeling some sadness and pain. Therefore you should live life,
With your mind with an open frame.

It's never going to be easy.
It's never going to go the way you like.
But that shouldn't stop you.
Give the bad times a little more fight.

Coz when its all over, You can claim your gift.
I gurantee whatever it is,
It'll give your spirit a lift.

Everyone wants the same thing.
They all want to live the good life.
With all the joy and happiness you'll ever want.
Isn't that worth a little sacrifice?

So keep your head up, And look straight ahead of you.

HI MR.Backe

Hi Mr. Backe! how are you doing today. We really miss you but I bet it's not just us 9-05 but every one you know in school. I know it just for a short period of time, but you thought us a lot of stuff that we don't usually do. I know that the things that i just said doesn't make sense. but for me it does. Its Brendan or (Less), Wanting to wish you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
Hope these post will make you happy and we all miss you a lot.

Just remember sub = boring math, but You Mr. Backe = a Very fun, exciting Math teacher.
Even though math can be boring at times, you always seem to spice it up and make it your own, that's why we like you as our Math teacher.

We hope to see you soon, but if that's not possible then that's ok.
We know that you need some time, I hope that you get better soon.
Don't forget that we are your second family as Melanie said, even though that might be weird to other but you aren't a boring teacher and that's why we think of you and our whole class as on big happy family.

One final thing is that you have made a difference in "The Classes" mind, and here is an example for how good you teaching, right before our first report cards when we were in rm.6, Mrs. Mota came in an told us that 9-05 ("The Class") had all passed Math. But before that she said that she wan't suppose to tell us this yet, but she did. When she did Everyone was very pleased.
We couldn't of done it without you Mr. Backe

Thank you so far and I hope you liked my post.
Hope you are feeling better soon.

Here's a video.
Even though its about aids in africa, it shows what people can do when they all come together.
Just like us "The Class", everybody needs love in there life when they are down, even if its just a hug.

For Mr.Backe (;

Hey Mr.B.. How are you doing? I hope you're alright. And so does everyone else. We all know that you need time to get through all of this, but all we're asking is for you to come back as soon as you can, because we'll be waiting here to give you a great big hug.

You've always been here for us, so now it's our turn to be here for you. You're a great teacher, so you deserve to have students that care for you. We miss you a lot, and math would never be the same with out you. You are the reason why we're "THE CLASS."

I hope you'll come to school tomorrow, because we all want to wish you a merry christmas and a happy new year. I'm bringing chocolates again, and I'm hoping that you'll be there when I'm giving them out.

Just remember, Sargent Park School is your second family, and we'll always be here for you.
Especially ME (;
Before you know it, I'll be right behind you, following you wherever you go.

Scribe Post Dec 17

OKAY! " The Class "

So I'm not sure if I am supposed to be scribing, but I will anyways.
So for the past few days, we really haven't done anything (:

On Tuesday we evaluated the games again. And got a million sheets for the new unit.
Sorry my scanner is not working so I couldn't put pictures of them.

On Wednesday we started to learn about bites and bytes. Then we had to go to Choir.

And Today we studied for law. I mean no we didn't Mr.B.....
Then we learned some more about bits and bytes.

Well tomorrow is the Dance, make sure you have your work in by tomorrow morning.

Yes, this scribe isn't very good, but comment anyways!

Re-Made Rational Number Video

Monday, December 14, 2009
Well guys, since the video Joseph posted many weeks ago had a bit of problems, Karen, Linda and I decided to fix it up. However, being what society is today, we put it off quite some bit. So sorry if it's hard to understand, or if the voice is a bit off.

PLEASE comment. Constructive criticism is always welcome. I'm pretty sure we also had some mistakes in there, but hey, nothing is ever perfect.

Scribe Post for December 14, 2009

Hello, 9-05. Today in class, we handed in our stash- it's. What should have been in it are your:
-self evaluation sheets
- foldable
- journal entry
-number line
- 3 point approach
- 2 tests that are signed by your parent/ guardian

We also did peer evaluation in other people's games. By the way, we were supposed to play 2 different games, and evaluate those games. We had to do the evaluation on a sheet that looks like this:
What you're suppose to write:
communication pieces- the name of the game, and the name of the person who owns the game
peer evaluator- write your name there (also on the spot that says "name:")
strengths (2nd column):
accuracy- if the math part on the game is accurate
logic- if the game makes sense (eg. if their rules makes sense)
clarity- is it clear
format- is it good (is it well made?)
other- any comments, or anything else you found special about the game.
suggestions (3rd cloumn):
-anything else that you would suggest to make the game even better
-comments
That was all we did in class. The only homework for math is those booklets (fractions, decimals). But we do have home work for other subjects in case you forgot:
-timeline, due tomorrow
-study science, test tomorrow
-mock trial assignments
By the way, if you're wondering why no one scribed on Thursday, and Friday, it's because we had a work period. I guess that's all. The next scribe is Shaneille. Please comment! :D

Hey 9-05, today instead of going to the lab, we stayed at the class and got our tests back and did a lot of other stuff.

The first thing we did in class today was look over our tests! One question that a lot of us got wrong was question 25, c.

c) With a denominator of 14 and a numerator that makes a rational number in lowest terms.

For my answer I put 7/14, and I got it wrong.

What it really asked us was to find a number that you can't simplify, like 1/14 or 5/14. I thought you had to find a number that you can make into lowest terms, like making 7/14 into 1/2. But I was wrong.

A few other things that Backe said, was never make a train when finding out an answer and to also put the unit of what your measuring ( cm, m).

The other thing we did in class was our foldables, if you didn't do it here's the link to the instructions:

/view.php?p=0f1911a03fa96daf0d930711fa50cfa85f453a1e&c=2">

We also had to do a three point approach, here are the words:
power
base
exponent
exponential form
difference between
x x
(-5) -5
( the x's are suppose to be shown as squared)

Here's what homework has to be down by monday:

(next chapter)
definitions
3.1 foldable
Here's what you have to hand in your stash it:
number line
definitions chapter 2
self evaluation (completed)
journal, with one squared for Backe to read
2 tests, with parent signatures
For extra work:
sheets

* Game done by monday

That's my scribe! For the next scribe I choose Angela . Please comment!!!

Hi there 9-05, and others! Today in math class we had a test. I was worried that it was going to be difficult, because I thought that we had to multiply and divide decimals the long way, but we didn't, so it turned out to not be that hard.

I don't remember exactly what the questions were on the test, so I'll put some questions that are similar.

1) 2/7 + 1/9 =
18/63 + 7/63 = -Find common denominators.
25/63 = -Add. You can't simplify because the two numbers don't have a common multiple.

2) √1.96=
√196= -Remove the decimal for now to make square rooting easier.
14 -Find the square root.
√ 1.96= 1.4 -Add the decimal back in where it belongs.

3) √ 7, to the nearest hundredth.
I'll estimate first to help me make sure that the answer is close.

√9 is 3, and the √4 is 2, so the answer must be between 2 and 3.
√ 7 is closer to 9, so the answer might be 2.6.
√ 7=2.65

After the test we got some sheets of paper for our new unit.
The first foldable looks exactly like your old one from the last unit, like this :

Look on page 90 in the textbook for how to make the second foldable. It should look like this:

HOMEWORK:
:Journal (like always)
:Work on the unit #2 foldables (if your not already done them)
:Make your foldables for the third unit.
For the next scribe I pick..... SIMRAN!!!

I hope that my scribe was okay, but if something is wrong, please feel free to COMMENT :)

Sorry about the somewhat late post! I fell asleep and forgot all about it until I thought about the test and I was like, oh, who's the scribe?

Today we went over textbook questions that we had trouble with.

One question we went over was number 27.
The surface area of a cube is 100cm squared. Determine the edge length of the cube, to the nearest tenth of a centimetre.

The only thing you know about the cube right now is that the surface area is 100 cm squared.

There are 6 faces on a cube so to get the area of one face of the cube you have to divide it by 6.

This is the area of one face. You have to get the side length so you have to square root it. Mr. Backe said that you didn't have to try so hard with 16 2/3 so he said to just punch in this in our calculators:

The side length is 4.082 which rounded to the nearest tenth of a centimeter is 4.1. So the side length of a cube with a surface area of 100 cm squared, is 4.1 cm.

(Sorry about the pictures. My paint thing is broken so I couldn't put in text so I had to hand write them.)
After that, we were told to do the following:
Math Workbook Chapter Link pg 24 and 25
Math Workbook Chapter 1-2 Review pg 26 and 27 I think OR Chapter 2 Practice Test pg 84 and 85
I think I might be missing something or something so if you find any mistakes feel free to tell me.
I pick Kara as the next scribe.

Hey 9-05! I'm sorry that this scribe post is late! Also I will make this scribe post kinda short.... Well, on friday's math class we reviewed our Thursday's homework. (CYU) Like...this question...

(sorry that it's blurry...) Well do you remember this question? The one you have to find which square root number is between 4.5 and 5.5?
Then thats what we did for like half of the class. Corrections. Then we had MORE homework to do. (by now you should be finished...)They were...
-Do 2.4 practise
-Apply do 3 of 15-19
do 7 of 20-30
-Extend 4 of the 5
If you could...do the worksheet 2.4 and the homework book 2.4
One of the 2.4 practise was this one...

...Well that's all for this post...see ya
PS next scribe post is....ALEIAH

Hello 9-05 I'm back once again with another scribe. Today Mr B showed us how to find LCM (Lowest Common Multiple). This is what he showed us...
*CLICK TO MAKE IMAGE BIGGER*

So Mr. B gave us 3 numbers. After those numbers we put the prime numbers that are below 10. Next we figured out how many times each prime number goes into each number. For example the number 3. The prime numbers below 10 are 2,3,5 and 7. So 2 goes into 3 no times so you put and exponent of 0 on the number 2. Then you do that for the next number which is 3, so 3 goes into 3 one time so you put an exponent of 1. Then 5 goes into 3 no times so you put an exponent of 0 for the number 5. Lastly 7 goes into 3 no times so you put an exponent of 0 on the number 7.

Then you do that for the next number which is 5. Which will give you 2^0, 3^0, 5^1, and 7^0

Now for the number 21 its different if you break down 21 into 2 numbers that multiply, you would get 3x7. Then you see put your prime numbers into that. Which would get you 2^0, 3^1, 5^0, and 7^1. So for bigger numbers its easier to break it down then to put the prime numbers into the multiples.

Well that's pretty much what we did in math today. Mr B just gave us more examples and explained it more clear. Well that's my scribe, sorry if their are any mistakes and if it is confusing. For the next scribe it will be FRANCIS M.

Multiplying Decimals

Hey 9-05! Abby here with a blog post about multiplying decimals! Multiplying decimals may seem hard, but it's fairly easy!

So let's work with these numbers:

So first of all, you have to multiply 5 by each individual number in 13.33.

Then, you multiply 6 by each individual number in 13.33. You have to add a zero at the end because you're actually multiplying by tenths.

Next, you multiply the 7 by each individual number in 13.33. Then, add two zeros to the end.

Now, what you have to do is add the answers up.

Oh! But we're not done yet! Since each factor contains a decimal, then the product must contain a decimal too! But how do we know where to put it? All you have to do is count how many numbers there are behind the decimals.

So since there are 4 numbers behind the decimals, we change the place value of the decimal 4 place values to the left.

So 13.33 multiplied by 7.65 gives a product of.. 101.9745!
