Question Number 26

Monday, November 9, 2009
Hello, well here is my late post on question number 26

Four points, A, B, C, and D, have the following coordinates:
A(0.75,0.81)
B(0.75,-0.65)
C(-1.22,-0.65)
D(-1.22,0.81)
what is the area of the quadrilateral ABCD, to the nearest
hundredth of a square unit

Well the picture should look something like this

just click the picture to make it larger

the length and with would be
L=1.97
W=1.46

now for the solving
L x W = A
1.97 x 1.46 = A
A=2.8762

So the area of the rectangle is 2.88 units squared

sorry that my post is so short and sorry if there are any mistakes.

Question Number 25

Sunday, November 8, 2009
This is my blog post for my homework, question number 25.

Sorry this is late, to my fellow classmates.

25) Create a word problem that involves operations with rational numbers in decimal form. Make sure you can solve your problem. Then, have a classmate solve your problem.

A) Casey likes basketball. So he's on a basketball team. Casey goes to practice every Monday and Friday. He practices on Monday for 1.8 hours. On Friday he practices for 120 min. What is the difference between Monday and Friday's practices in minute form.

Solution) First you would convert Monday's hours into minutes. = 140 min.
Secondly you would then just subtract Friday's hours from Mondays, because Friday is already in minute from.
140 - 120 = 20 min.
20 min is the difference.

Please comment on my mistakes ! Thank you !

Question Number 24

Hello 9-05. I am sorry for the late post because i didn't have access to a computer until today. But hey, its better now then never :)

Copy and complete each statement:
a) __+1.8=-3.5
b)-13.3-__=-8.9
c)__x(-4.5)=-9.45
d)-18.5/__=7.4

Answers:
a)-3.5+(-1.8)=-5.3 (I changed 1.8 to a negative because I put it on the other side of the equals sign along with the sum)
b)-13.3+8.9=-4.4 (Same thing applies for this question)
c)-9.45/4.5=2.1 (used the opposite operation to find it)
d)-2.5 (I dont know how to explain this one) sorry for inconvenience :(

Well, this is my post worth 100 % of my mark! hahaha!

Hey guys sorry mine was late

Mr.B assigned me question number 19

QUESTION:
19. A company made a profit of $8.6 million on its first year. It lost $5.9 million on its second year and lost another $6.3 million ont ist third year.

a) What was the average profit or loss per year over the first three years?

b) The company broke even over over the first four years What was its loss or profit in the fourth year.

ANSWER:
a) What was the average profit or loss per year over the first three years?

To get the answer first you need to subtract 8.6 to 5.9, then you will get the answer of 2.7 the subtract another 6.3 then you will get the answer of -3.6, because it says avareage you need to devide it by three because its the first three years, so you will get the answer of -1.2 or loss of $1.2 million per year

The only difference is that subtracting it instead of adding it bacause it says loosing money per year.

b)The company broke even over over the first four years What was its loss or profit in the fourth year.

The answer is a profit of 3.6 per year

There you go guys hope you understand my answer please leave a cooment and please tell me if i did somethng wrong or if i forgot somthing

Question #27

Saturday, November 7, 2009
KEY (Legend)
RED - A question
GREEN - An answer
BLUE - A key term (important to know)

HEY GUYS! Guess what? My math post is late .. UH-OH! Well, had a busy weekend, so going to do it right now. Well I got question #27 of Extend. Here is the question.

27. The mean of six rational numbers is -4.3.
a) What is the sum of the rational numbers?
b) If five of the numbers equal -4.5, what is the sixth number?

Since this is in the "Extend" section, it's something we haven't really looked at. Do you guys remember this? Measures of Central Tendency. Well we're looking at the term "mean", which some of you might remember basically means "average". The way to find the mean, would be to add up all of the data, and divide it by how many numbers there are.

a) To find the mean of -4.3, we need to find 6 numbers. Since it means average, wouldn't it be easy to have all the data the same number? We're trying to find 6 numbers with a mean of -4.3, so what if the data all equaled 4.3? Let's see. -4.3 (6) = ? Well simple, it equals -25.8! That's the answer to 27 a), and it will be used in question b).

b) If five of the numbers equal -4.5, what is the sixth number? Well, that's simple, or it should be. You have 5 numbers that equal -4.5, which means.. multiplication! The question would be -4.5 (5). Use a calculator, and you get the number -22.5.

This part is simple, remember the answer to question a) ? Well now, you have 5 numbers, and need 6. And remember, the sum has to equal -25.8 for the mean to be -4.3. Take your two answers from earlier and do simple subtraction. -25.8 -(-22.5) = ? Well you see, as Mr. Harbeck likes to put it, there is an "uh-oh" in the question. "owe 25.8 owe owe 22.5" Anyone rembember that? Anyways, to fix that, you just turn 22.5 into a positive and add it. Since -(- looks like + anyways. The question now turns into -25.8 + 22.5 = ? Simple enough, the answer would be -3.3. And that folks, would be the last number to your data set. Sum it all up and your data will look like this. -4.5, -4.5, -4.5, -4.5, -4.5, -3.3. That data would have a sum of -25.8 and a mean of -4.3.

REVIEW! Read if you just need answers!
a) Sum is -25.8
b) The sixth number would be -3.3

Anyways guys, hope you had fun reading my late post. Remember, that uh-oh subtraction thing is only a method to do it. You do not need to do that every time if the question is easy enough. Finish all of your questions 9-05! TEST ON MONDAY!

Question Number 23

Hey 9-05. Sorry this is late. I had a volleyball tourney yesterday and i didn't do it. Her es question number 23 for you guys who don't understand it. The question was...One week in October in Iqaluit, Nunavut, the daily high temperatures were -4.6°C, -0.5°C, 1.2°C, 2.3°C, -1.1°C, 1.5°C, -3.0°C. What was the mean daily high temperatures for that week?

Step One: Order all your numbers or decimals into ascending order.

Step Two:Add them all together.

Step Three:Divided your answer by the amount of numbers seen in the equation.

Once you have done all these steps it should look like this...

-4.6,-3.0,-1.1,-0.5,1.2,1.5,2.3,=-4.2

Then you divide 4.2/7

Your answer will come out too..... -0.6

Sorry this is so late. Agin I had a volleybal tourney and I could only do this now. PLEASE LEAVE COMMENTS!!!

Rational NUmbers

What is a rational number?
Any number of arithmetic: Any whole number, fraction, mixed number or decimal; together with its negative image.
A rational number is a nameable number, in the sense that we can name it according to the standard way of naming whole numbers, fractions, and mixed numbers. "Five," "Six thousand eight hundred nine," "Nine hundred twelve millionths," "Three and one-quarter," and so on.

A rational number can always be written in what form?
As a fraction
a b
, where a and b are integers (b 0).
An integer itself can be written as a fraction: b = 1. And from arithmetic, we know that we can write a decimal as a fraction.
When a and b are positive, that is, when they are natural numbers, then we can always name their ratio.
Hence the term, rational number. N
ow a fraction can always be expressed as a decimal.
Either the decimal will terminate -- as 1/4 = .25;
or the decimal will have a predictable pattern -- as 1/11 = .090909. . .
A rational number, then, can always be expressed as such a decimal. -->

Question #12

12. A pelican dives vertically from a height of 3.8m above the water. It then catches a fish 2.3m underwater.

a) Write an expression using rational numbers to represent the length of the pelican's dive.
b) How long is the pelican's dive?

Hi everyone!! Sorry, that this is a late post, but at least i did it :D
So, here are my answers for Question 12.

a) It says here that the pelican dives verically from a height of 3.8m above the water. (3.8) Then it says here that it then catches a fish 2.3m underwater. (-2.3). So, I think the expression using rational numbers to represent the length of the pelican's dive is 3.8-(-2.3)

b) For this one. I just added 3.8m to 2.3 like this 3.8+2.3. Then i got this for the answer 6.1m.
So, then this is the whole rational expression. 3.8-(-2.3)=6.1m
Well, that's all. Please comment on my mistakes. Thank you ! :D

Textbook Question #24

Hello everybody,
Today I will be explaining Question #24 in our textbooks.

The question is "Copy and Complete each statement".

*What you need to do for this question is you have to fill in the purple squares with a number.

For #1
To figure this question out you have to:
Subtract (-3.5) - 1.8 , which will give you an answer of -5.3.
To verify that you put in -5.3, where the square is and you should get the answer given in the question.
The question after you have filled in the answer, should look like this, (-5.3) + 1.8 = -3.5.

For # 2
First you need to subtract (-13.3) by (-8.9), which will give you an answer of -4.4
To verify that you put in -4.4, where the square is and you should get the answer given in the question.
The question after you have filled in the answer, should look like this, (-13.3) - (-4.4) = -8.9

For #3
First you need to figure out what multiplied by (-4.5) gives you -9.45. To do that you need to find out a certain number, and we all know that 2 × -4.5 = -9, so to get to
-9.45 you need to go 2.1 × -4.5, which will give you the answer of -9.45.
The question after you have filled in the answer, should look like this, 2.1 × -4.5 = -9.45.

For #4

First you need to divide -18.5 by 7.4, which will give you an answer of -2.5
To verify that you put in -2.5, where the square is and you should get the answer given in the question.
The question after you have filled in the answer, should look like this, -18.5 /2.5 = 7.4.

There you have it question 24 solved.
Thanks for reading!

Question #21

The first thing you have to do is find how fast Andrew was going. To find out you have to Divide how long he drove by the hours. So you have to divide 234 by 3. You will get 78.

Andrew's average speed is 78 km/h. Brian drove 5 km/h faster then Andrew. So it would be
78+5 =83 km/h.

Now we have to find out how much time Brian took to get from Dawson to Mayo. So its 234 divided by 83. And it equals 2.819277108.

So the 2 means 2 hours. We will keep the 2 aside for now and worry about the 0.819.

0.819 x 60 = 49.14
60 - 49.14 = 10.86
And because it said round to the nearest minute...
And the answer is 11 minutes!
So Brian took 11 less minutes than Andrew.

Question #29

What's up fellow members of "THE CLASS"!! I hope you're having a good long week-end. So anyways this is a post about #29 from apply. The question was really easy. But, finding where to put the parenthesis is just trial and error.

The question was basically saying to put parenthesis in the equations to match the answer it had, for each letter.

* To solve the equations, remember to use:
The processes (known as PEDMAS), in order.

Parenthesis
Exponents
Division
Multiplication
Addition
Subtraction

a) 3.5x4.1-3.5-2.8=-0.7

b) 2.5+(-4.1)+(-2.3)x(-1.1)=4.29

c) -5.5-(-6.5)÷2.4+(-1.1)=-0.5

That's all you had to do for #29 Apply. Remember to finish all the homework, which is found on the homepage!

* Sorry if I haven't been commenting for the past 3 days or so, it's because of the language exam. Promise to catch up on commenting and many other things!

And don't forget to comment! :D
Hey hey hey :) Wow, this is my first time doing a scribe in a long time. Well anyways I got number 26, for the question thing. Kay, let me get this started :)

26. Four points, A,B,C and D, have the following coordinates:

A(0.75, 0.81)
B(0.75, -0.65)
C(-1.22, -0.65)
D(-1.22, 0.81)

What is the area of quadrilateral ABCD, to the nearest hundredth of a square unit?

I came up with this, I got this answer with Mr.Marks help. :)

Question #18

QUESTION 18

Hi everyone! Well for the text book questions I got question 18!(yay) So Ill go straight to the point! The question was...

Determine the mean of each set of numbers. Express your answer to the nearest hundreth, if necessary.

Okay here's how you do this. First you add all the numberes up.(you can put it in order of you want but we're doing the mean so that doesn't really matter, but it's good if you do put it in order) Then you count the number of numbers.(Sorry if im not to clear on this...) Then the sum of all the numbers divided by the numbers of numbers you counted equals the mean.

Okay here's question 18 A)

And Question 18 B)

Well thats everything...sorry if I didn't explain really clearly...(I tried)

SEE YOU GUYS SOON! ^_^

Question #15

15.) In dry air, the temperature decreases by about 0.65 degrees Celsius for each 100 meter increase in altitude.

a.) The temperature in Red Deer, Alberta, is 10 degrees Celsius on a dry day. What is the temperature outside an aircraft 2.8 kilometers above the city.

The picture is not really clear I'm going to explain it:
a.) The answer is -8.2 degrees C at 2.8 km.
How did I get this? I added 10 degrees by negative 18.2 degrees.
How did I get -18.2
(0.65/100)x(2.8)x(1000)
*1 km is equal to 1000 m.

b.) The temperature outside an aircraft 1600 meters above Red Deer is -8.5 degrees Celsius. What is the temperature in the city?

b.) The answer is 1.9 degrees Celsius.
How did I get this? I added negative 8.5 and 10.4 degrees together and got 1.9.
How did I get 10.4? (0.65/100)x(1600)

It might not make sense, it was hard for me to explain it. Sorry, if it's late Mr. Backe. I was supposed to be done before 6 but the picture thing was'nt working properly. Like, whenever i upload my pics it doesn't show, it's just a small little box. There was just lot's of problems, I'm sorry it's okay if I get low marks.

Question #27

Hey 9-05, Mr.B assigned me question number 27. If I have any mistakes please comment and help me out! Please and thank you (:

27. The mean of six rational numbers is -4.3.
a)What is the sum of the rational numbers?
The sum is -25.8.

If you're wondering how I got my answer, all I did was multiply -4.3 with 6. Why did I multiply with 6? The statement above says the mean of six rational number is -4.3. To find the mean you have to add all the numbers and divide the sum by six. When you divide -25.8 by six the answer will be -4.3.

b)If five of the numbers each equal -4.5, what is the sixth number?
The sixth number will be -3.3.

The question tells us that five of the numbers equal -4.5. So I multiplied -4.5x5 and it gives me -22.5. If the sum is -25.8 you just have subtract -22.5 and you get -3.3. So if we multiply -4.5 with 5 and add -3.3 you get -25.8 (the sum) and if you divide -25.8 you get -4.3.

Okay, Im done. But please don't forget to comment and find my mistakes if I have any. Thanks you guys! (:

Question #23

Hey everybody, Mr.B was so very kind that he gave us even more homework...I guess that it's not that much homework but oh well. The type of homework for us was to be posting a..well, post for a certain question that was assigned to us during class. Mine was question #23 which is surprisingly not that hard to do. Below will show what I did...Comment if I did this wrong, that would really help.

Question #23
One week in October in Iqaluit, Nunavut, the daily high temperatures were -4.6 C, -0.5 C, 1.2 C, 2.3 C, -1.1 C, 1.5 C, and -3.0 C. What was the main daily high temperature that week?

Answer: I think, that to find the answer for this problem is to add all of the daily temperatures and divide by how many there are, which would be 7.

This is the How to Do.....

Simpilest way to do it..

Positives: 1.2+2.3+1.5=5

Negatives: -4.6+(-0.5)+(-1.1)+(-3.0)=-9.2

Add the Sums: 5+(-9.2)=-4.2

Now the final part of the problem would be dividing the sum by how many numbers there are...which is again...7...

Sentence Answer: The main daily high temperature for that week is -0.6 C

Well I'm guessing that's all that you really had to do...I hoped you liked this post, and I hope the decorations on the back of the pictures didn't interfere...Please, again comment if I did anything wrong, maybe even if I did the whole thing wrong, just comment~
Thank you for reading!!

Question #23

Hi guys! I was assigned question number 23 (as you probably already guessed). Anyways, here's the question:

One week in October in Iqaluit, Nunavut, the daily high temperatures were -4.6°C, -0.5°C, 1.2°C, 2.3°C, -1.1°C, 1.5°C, -3.0°C. What was the mean daily high temperatures for that week?

Well first, you have to know what a mean is. A mean is the sum of all the data, divided by the the number of data. Also known as the average.

1) Well, the first step is to group together the positive and the negative numbers.
2) Then add the like signs together.
3) Add the sums together.
4) Divide the sum of the data by the number of data (in this case, 7)

1) (-4.6, -0.5, -1.1, -3.0) + (+1.2, +2.3, +1.5)

2) = -9.2 + 5

3) = -4.2/7

4) = -0.6

I'm SO sorry this is late. I had so many problems with my computer :P I tried to upload a picture but..... yeah. Anyway, I hope this explains the question.
PLEASE COMMENT! :)

Question #20

Hello 9-05! I will be doing question 20, I kind of had a hard time with this so if you catch a mistake please tell me!

20) Research to find out the current price of gasoline in Calgary. It is 300 km from Calgary to Edmonton. How much less would it cast to drive this distance in a car with fuel consumption of 5.9 L/100 km than in a car with fuel consumption of 9.4 L/100 km? Give your answer in dollars, expressed to the nearest cent.

West Edmonton Mall (Taken by me)

So I put the question in bold and if you don't really understand it, it means what is the difference between the prices of gas? And difference is the answer in a subtraction question for those who don't know. So we need to find the how much the gas costs for both cars and then we have to subtract it to find the difference.

The gas price is 94.6 cents.
We need to find out how to get from 100 km to 300 km. So you can put the L and km in a fraction and multiply both by 3.

Then you have to put the gas price in a fraction over 100.

Then you multiply the L by the gas.

So now we have to find the difference.

So the difference is $9.95. So that's it and I told you I had a hard time with this and if I made a mistake please tell me and comment. Thanks for reading!

Homework # 17

Hey 9-05! So I was assigned question 17 from apply in the math text book. When I looked at the question I was really upset cause backe skipped Angela and went straight to me. I think it was because I said his joke wasn't funny. Anyways when I actually read the question I realized that it was pretty simple. So thanks backe.

17. Two wooden poles measured 1.35m and 0.83m in length. To make a new pole they were attached by overlapping the ends and tying them together. The length of the overlap was 12cm. What was the total length of the new pole in metres?

So the first step that I did was converting 12 cm into metres, so I divided 12 by 100 and got 0.12m.

Now I added the two poles length together: 1.35 + 0.83= 2.18

Like we did with surface area, we have to take away the part where it overlaps:

2.18
-0.12
________
2.06

The new length of the pole is 2.06m. I hope I explained the question well, if I didn't please comment!

Question #16

Hi fellow 9-05 classmates. Kara here, and my blog post is going to be on question number 16 from page 61 in the textbook. ENJOY!

Bella is more comfortable working with integers than with positive and negative decimal numbers. This is her way of understanding -4.3 + 2.5

a)Use Bella's method to determine 6.1 + (-3.9).

Okay, so for this one you have to put the decimal into fraction form. For that you have to multiply 6.1 x 10 which equals 61. Then you divide 61 by 10, so that it looks like this: 61/10. After that you multiply -3.9 x 10 which equals -39. Then you divide -39 by 10, so that it looks like this: -39/10. After that you add the two together (use a number line if that helps). The answer should be 22 tenths. Finally you convert 22 tenths back into 2.2 (shown above).

b)How could you modify Bella's method to determine 1.25 -3.46?

Well, to make this one work, you should probably use hundredths instead of tenths. Let me explain.

1.25 in words is one and twenty-five hundredths. That is why you use hundredths. It's the same for 3.46, that one is three and forty-six hundredths.

I hope that you can understand my scribe. I also hope that you enjoyed reading it! If I made no sense, PLEASE COMMENT AND TELL ME THAT :]
