Question Number 13

Thursday, November 26, 2009

Hey 9-05,sorry for the latness.I just got home.I just want to get out that GOODLUCK to all volleyball teams this weekend and next weekend and lets hope you win!The question for homework I'm doing is question 13. The question is...

The diameter of Pluto is 6/17 the diameter of Mars.Mars is 17/300 the diameter of Saturn.
A)What fraction of the diameter of Saturn is the diameter of Pluto?
B)The diameter of Saturn is 120 00 km.What is the diameter of Pluto?

A) In order to get your answer you need take the diameter of Mars and the diameter of pluto and multiply them together then simplify to the lowest answer possible.
B) In order to get the answer for this question you'll need to take the answer 1/5 and multiply it by 120,000 and you'll get your answer.

A)6/17 * 17/300=102/5100=1/50
B)1/50(120 000)=2400km

Pluto has a diameter of 2400 km.

Today in class we went through the home work that was assigned for the week end. I am going to do one of the questions that someone had trouble with.

The question is asking which method is better for you. So let us compare the two different methods Ming and Al have to offer us.

To do Ming's method all you do is multiply the fractions and simply to the lowest terms.

Al's Method is a little different. We are canceling the numbers as you can see. Canceling numbers saves you the trouble of simplifying the fraction later.

I personally prefer Al's method. The method makes things more easy to work with. Multiplying -1 by -1 is a lot easier and faster than multiplying -7 by -5 right? But it all depends on how you do your math and which one you are more comfortable with.

Before Mr.Backe told us to start our home work he showed us another way to divide fractions, compliments of Mr.Mark.

As you can see this method is a little different than the one we have been doing for awhile now, but it still gets you to the right answer.

Home work for today is to do Extend question number 25. Also you have to do the History Link on page 71 about Fractions and Ancient Egypt.

The next scribe is Linda.
Starting the scribe cycle from the beginning.

Hello class, I'm sorry for the late scribe post, but I have a good reason for that! My sister was on it because she needed it for her university courses :) There you go. Well, time to get back on topic! Yesterday in class we went over the subtraction questions that were for homework. Then after that we went on to learning how to multiplying fractions. It's the most easiest thing to learn if I do say so myself :)

1/3 x 1/2 = 1/6
(1/3 groups of 1/2)

1/2 x 1/4 = 1/8
(0.5 x 0.25 = 0.125)

2 x 3 = 6

Multiplying proper fractions is relatively easy, unlike adding or subtracting fractions, where we NEVER add or subtract the denominator, we DO multiply both the numerator and denominator. a/b x c/d= ac/bd. Simplify if possible.

When multiplying mixed numbers, first change each mixed number into and improper fraction, then multiply. Simplify if possible.
ex. 3 1/2 x 4 1/5 = 7/2 x 21/5
     = 147/10
     = 14 7/10

These were 8 of the 10 math questions that were for homework:
1. 2/3 x 5/8 = 10/24
     = 5/12

2. -2 1/3 x 1/5 = -7/3 x 1/5
 = -6/15

3. -(-1 1/8) x (-2 1/4) = 9/8 x -9/4
      = -49/24
      = -2 1/24

4. -(1/3) (1/4) (1/5) = (1/12) ( 1/5)
   = 1/60

5. (9/21) (7/8)= 63/168

Sorry 9-05 I can't explain anything else because my sister needs the computer as soon as possible. THANKYOU FOR YOUR TIME AND COMMENT :)
