To Mr. Backe

Hey Mr. Backe, it's me Dean, on late as usual. Haha :D
As you must already know by our many posts, we miss you. No doubt, even I miss you! We've all learned to look at you closer than a teacher. It's hard to not see you in class anymore, with all the jokes, the fooling around, the laughter that we enjoy when your teaching. We're the class, and to all of us, you are part of the class. We all stand strong as one family and no less. We know your going through tough times, but don't forget, we have your back 100%. No matter what life throws at us, we'll handle it together Mr. Backe, promise.

I remember the time near my lockers when you talked to me about my test. I know I told you I was going to get 100%, so I tried. Yet, the test was hard, especially for me. That being said, I know I can do better, with your teachings, with all your help, I want you to be there. I want you to be the one that grades my test, not a substitute. You see, your the one that teaches the class, there is no other. One day Mr. Backe, I will get that 100% like I promised you. But please, just be there to see it. (:

Well guys, since the video Joseph posted many weeks ago had a bit of problems, Karen, Linda and I decided to fix it up. However, being what society is today, we put it off quite some bit. So sorry if it's hard to understand, or if the voice is a bit off.



PLEASE comment. Constructive criticism is always welcome. I'm pretty sure we also had some mistakes in there, but hey, nothing is ever perfect.

HEY GUYS! Guess what? My math post is late .. UH-OH! Well, had a busy weekend, so going to do it right now. Well I got question #27 of Extend. Here is the question.

27. The mean of six rational numbers is -4.3.
a) What is the sum of the rational numbers?
b) If five of the numbers equal -4.5, what is the sixth number?

Since this is in the "Extend" section, it's something we haven't really looked at. Do you guys remember this? Measures of Central Tendency. Well we're looking at the term "mean", which some of you might remember basically means "average". The way to find the mean, would be to add up all of the data, and divide it by how many numbers there are.

a) To find the mean of -4.3, we need to find 6 numbers. Since it means average, wouldn't it be easy to have all the data the same number? We're trying to find 6 numbers with a mean of -4.3, so what if the data all equaled 4.3? Let's see. -4.3 (6) = ? Well simple, it equals -25.8! That's the answer to 27 a), and it will be used in question b).


b) If five of the numbers equal -4.5, what is the sixth number? Well, that's simple, or it should be. You have 5 numbers that equal -4.5, which means.. multiplication! The question would be -4.5 (5). Use a calculator, and you get the number -22.5.

This part is simple, remember the answer to question a) ? Well now, you have 5 numbers, and need 6. And remember, the sum has to equal -25.8 for the mean to be -4.3. Take your two answers from earlier and do simple subtraction. -25.8 -(-22.5) = ? Well you see, as Mr. Harbeck likes to put it, there is an "uh-oh" in the question. "owe 25.8 owe owe 22.5" Anyone rembember that? Anyways, to fix that, you just turn 22.5 into a positive and add it. Since -(- looks like + anyways. The question now turns into -25.8 + 22.5 = ? Simple enough, the answer would be -3.3. And that folks, would be the last number to your data set. Sum it all up and your data will look like this. -4.5, -4.5, -4.5, -4.5, -4.5, -3.3. That data would have a sum of -25.8 and a mean of -4.3.

REVIEW! Read if you just need answers!
a) Sum is -25.8
b) The sixth number would be -3.3

Anyways guys, hope you had fun reading my late post. Remember, that uh-oh subtraction thing is only a method to do it. You do not need to do that every time if the question is easy enough. Finish all of your questions 9-05! TEST ON MONDAY!

Hello, 905. This post will talk about most of the things we talked about in class.
PURPLE - indicates a key term. (it would be best to remember this).

The first thing Mr. Backe wanted us to do was a question that looked like this:
We had to insert a sign in the middle that made the statement true. ( > is greater than, < is less than, = is the same.) First you would need to find the lowest common denominator (LCD) How you do that, is by multiplying the two denominators. So .. 7 (9) = 63. 63 would be the LCD. Remember, what you do to the bottom, you do to the top. <-- (Remember this for ratios later on.) Now you need 3 (9) = ? and for the other fraction 4 (7) = ?. The first answer would be 27 and the second one would be 28. Put all of the answers together and it would be WAY easier to compare. Your end result should look like the second picture. Why does this work? Because the fractions on the left and the fractions on the right are equivalent fractions. The only difference is that one is showed in simplest form.



Next, he wanted us to find numbers that fit in between 0.3 and 0.4. Also for 0.25 and 0.45. The number 0.35 would fit in between for both. A LOT of numbers would fit in between. An infinite amount of numbers. Meaning the list is endless. Mr. Backe also wanted to know which has more numbers in between. We all know it has an inifinite amount in between, BUT what we had to do was find the range of the numbers. You find range by subtracting the smallest number from the biggest number. So .. 0.4 - 0.3 = 0.1. And 0.45 - 0.25 = 0.2. The second set would have more numbers because it has a higher range. Remember, even if there is an infinite amount of numbers in between, the one with the larger range would have even more than that.

PS. At the end of class he gave us 3 signs. %, ¢, and $. What do these all have in common? Percent, 1 cent, 100 cents. Hmm, CENTS. They all have the word cent in it, which if you didn't know means 100.

Why 360?

The number of degrees in a circle is 360. Haven't you guys ever wondered why? Well the answer to that dates back to a long time ago. About the time of the Babylonians. It's a somewhat complicated method, but it will be explained simpler in this post. This is only one of the explanations, as there is many more out there. Have a look at other posts for different theories.

Anyways, the Babylonians were very smart people. They had and used a sexagesimal numeral system. They used 60 as their base number, whereas we use 10. The Babylonians were smart enough to figure out that 360 was close enough to a full year. They were only 5.25 days off. Now here's where it gets a bit complicated. They knew the sun went around the earth in a circle (it doesn't, it goes around in an eclipse [oval shape]) and they knew it takes 360 days for that to happen. All they had to do now, was put those 2 together. You have a circle, and you have 360 days to complete it, make sense? Look at this picture to the right, imagine each day being 1 degree. The sun goes around moves around the earth about 1 degree per day. When I read that, I understood why the number 360 was used.


Why not 360? 360 is a great number. Did you know it has an astonishing 24 factors? Imagine if you used the number 100 for a circle. The only factors you would have there are 1, 2, 4, 5, 10, 20, 25, 50, and 100. Now let's look at the number 360. I'll list them all, but be prepared for a mouthful of numbers. The factors are, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, 9, 10, 12, 15, 18, 20, 24, 30, 36, 40, 45, 60, 72, 90, 120, 180, and 360. Talk about a great number. That's all that there is too it. It's one of the many theories of why 360 was chosen. And why not? Hope this post helps a bunch, be sure to comment and tell me if I missed anything or if I helped you out.

Hello 9-05.
I know the past few weeks have been tough, since everything is so new to us.
With all the extra curricular activities that some of us have been joining for credits, it's getting a bit tough to find a balance. Let's finish this year off strong, let's be the class that people will remember. Good luck to you on all your assignments which you and I should be doing right now. Bye!
