Marc's Journal Entry

Sunday, April 18, 2010
Hey there you guys 8D! Were supposed to make a post for the best journal entry for the past two units that we've done...I chose the entry for the test of both chapter 7 and 5, which made it so much easier.

Entry: March 19,2010 ******************(Start)

Today we basically corrected our tests. There are a few questions people had trouble with, but I'm not completley sure if they were the ones.
(^2=Squared)

19. Write a simplified expression for the area of the following figure. What is the area of this figure?
--------------------------
20. Apply the distributive property to simplify: 2x(x-4)-3x(x-4)

=2x^2-8x-3x^2+12x (combine like-terms)
=2x^2-3x^2-8x+12x
=x^2+4x
--------------------------
21. A pool table is twice as long as it is wide. If the area of the pool table is 2.88m^2, what are the dimensions of the table.

We are also to try and play a game called "Save the Zogs", in http://www.mathplayground.com/
**********************************(end)
Thank You for reading my entry, leave a comment :)

Scribe Post for March 8, 2010

Monday, March 8, 2010
Today for math we finally got our tests back! The first bit of class was actually finding the mistakes that we did and fixed them. The second half of class was literally learning new stuff, the most special thing that we learned in class was a procedure called "FOIL". Which actually stands for First, Outside, Inside, Last.

Some of the questions that we did for practice was the following:

1.(3a+3)(-3a+4)

F - (3a)(3a)= 9a^2
O - (3a)(-3)= -9a
I - (3)(3a) = 9a
L - (3)(-3) = -9

-9a^2+12a-9a+12 = 9a^2-9

2.(6a-2)(6a+3)

F - (6a)(6a)= 36a^2
O - (6a)(3)= 18a
I - (-2)(6a)= -12a
L - (-2)(3)= -6

36a^2+18a-12a-6= 36a^2+6a-6

3.(-4a+3)(-3a+4)

F - (-4a)(-3a) = 12a^2
O - (-4a)(4) = -16a
I - (3)(-3a) = -9a
L - (3)(4) = 12

12a^2-16a-9a+12 = 12^2-25a+12

That's about how much we learned today, I know it's not incredibly a lot or hard at all. Remember that "FOIL" only works when 2 binomials are being combined(multiplied)..

I don't think there's any homework that I know of, please tell me if I'm wrong.

Scribe Post for January 12, 2010

Ok well..this is going to be one really short scribe. Today was just a work period which means we got lots of homework to do. The only main important thing of this scribe is the work pages we need to have done, and also the other things for Mr. B to collect on monday.

Things that need to be done:
-The Wrap It Up(the hand-out only) you're not supposed to number 3 on that.
-Test(Hand-Out)..very simple except for the last question..that confused me.
-And you have a choice of either doing the Test or Review in the book.

The Things Collected on Monday:
-All the Mathlinks(Hand-Outs)
-Wrap it Up(Hand-outs) so you have to actually do this...
-Introduction...though I can't seem to find mine..
-The two foldables(the one with lots of flaps on it and the three-point-approach.

And the next scribe is...Francis A. MUAHAHAHA...haaah..yeah.

Mr. Backe

Hey Mr.B, to tell you the truth I have absolutley no idea what's really going on here but i'll post something like everyone else. As you can see already from all the other post, we MISS YOU! :D, and class isn't as fun and I'm a bit wierded out by that because I hated taking notes but I actually kind of miss it. I never knew class would be so...boring without you teaching...sorry if that sounded cheezy xD. Well anyways I hope you'll be feeling better after the break because we've got alot more to learn. I give you my best wishes =P

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays!

"Cheer Up"
By: SaintJ

It gets tough to hang on.
You often feel like letting go.
You dont give a damn about the future,
And all the more tortures it holds.

But if you think about it a little,
Life also makes the pain worth living it.
So instead of cursing at life, I hope you can try forgiving it.

With every sunset,
Comes a sunrise.
A new ray of hope, Pleasing to the eyes.

You can only truly appreciate happiness,
By feeling some sadness and pain. Therefore you should live life,
With your mind with an open frame.

It's never going to be easy.
It's never going to go the way you like.
But that shouldn't stop you.
Give the bad times a little more fight.

Coz when its all over, You can claim your gift.
I gurantee whatever it is,
It'll give your spirit a lift.

Everyone wants the same thing.
They all want to live the good life.
With all the joy and happiness you'll ever want.
Isn't that worth a little sacrifice?

So keep your head up, And look straight ahead of you.

Question 21

Friday, November 27, 2009
Hey Everybody! Ok well let's get started...the question was,

Question #21:
Calculate..
a) 1/3(2/5-1/2)+3/10

b) 3/4 ./. 5/8-3/8 ./. 1/2 (./.=divided by)

c)one 1/2+one 1/2(-two 5/6+1/3)

Starting with A you have to do the parenthesis first which you equal -1/10 and then you just put them together...
1/3-1/10+3/10 which now looks pretty simple..when you add them up you get 8/15!!

Next is B first of all, you kind of break it apart like this, (3/4 ./. 5/8)-(3/8 ./. 1/2) next you do the parenthesis, the first would be one 1/5 and the second one would be 6/8, simplified would be 3/4 then you just put it together like this.
one 1/5-3/4=9/20!!

(edited)Next would be C and well I THOUGHT this would be hard...but now after Mr.B helped me and told me what I did wrong I get it now. You have to think BEDMAS or PEDMAS it's practically the same thing. But anyways you first have to do the brackets or the parenthesis. If you did it correctly, you should have gotten this answer= -two 1/2 then the next part in BEDMAS is multiplication because the bracket is touching the one 1/2. Then you should've got -three 3/4 by now. Then the last part would be adding the other one 1/2 which would equal= -two 1/4!!! YAY I finally got it.

Now please comment if there there are anymore mistakes~

Question #23

Friday, November 6, 2009
Hey everybody, Mr.B was so very kind that he gave us even more homework...I guess that it's not that much homework but oh well. The type of homework for us was to be posting a..well, post for a certain question that was assigned to us during class. Mine was question #23 which is surprisingly not that hard to do. Below will show what I did...Comment if I did this wrong, that would really help.

Question #23
One week in October in Iqaluit, Nunavut, the daily high temperatures were -4.6 C, -0.5 C, 1.2 C, 2.3 C, -1.1 C, 1.5 C, and -3.0 C. What was the main daily high temperature that week?

Answer: I think, that to find the answer for this problem is to add all of the daily temperatures and divide by how many there are, which would be 7.

This is the How to Do.....

Simpilest way to do it..

Positives: 1.2+2.3+1.5=5

Negatives: -4.6+(-0.5)+(-1.1)+(-3.0)=-9.2

Add the Sums: 5+(-9.2)=-4.2

Now the final part of the problem would be dividing the sum by how many numbers there are...which is again...7...

Sentence Answer: The main daily high temperature for that week is -0.6 C

Well I'm guessing that's all that you really had to do...I hoped you liked this post, and I hope the decorations on the back of the pictures didn't interfere...Please, again comment if I did anything wrong, maybe even if I did the whole thing wrong, just comment~
Thank you for reading!!

Elegant Algebraic Formulas

Sunday, October 18, 2009
Hi, again... this is going to be my second post for today and it's going to be about the most "Elegant Algebraic Formulas" to use for finding the surface areas for certain shapes.

The most elegant algebraic formula for find the cube's surface area is S.A=6s², because there are 6 faces and each side is a certain measurement.

The best or I mean the most elegant algebraic formula for finding the Surface area for the Rectangular Prism is in the picture below..

And Finally the elegant algebraic formula for finding the Surface area for the Cylinder is again, located in the picture below...

Rational Numbers

Well I guess I'm really lucky because I didn't really know about this part of the homework for the weekend, so that little gut feeling saved me there. Since we did our test, that means that were starting a new unit which is most likely the so-called "Rational Numbers". I'm pretty sure that we learnt this last year but I obviously forgot, but I looked it up.

Rational Numbers- Means that specific numbers that can be written as a fraction or ratio with 2 integers. An easy example is 5, five can be written like so= 5/1.

(Just so you know)Integers- Integers are all whole numbers and their opposites like 1,2,3,4,5 or -1,-2,-3,-4,-5 (got the definition from Mr.B's comment on Joseph's Rational Numbers post)

Irrational Numbers- The absolutley opposite meaning of Rational Numbers. An example you can try out is the square root of 7 because the decimal keeps going on and on. Which means you can't write a ratio or fration with irrational numbers.

Scribe Post for October 15

Well let's see here, for today's class, the first thing we did was review what we did last night. I'm not a robot or a perfect human either so I don't quite remember the questions that we did in class. But what I remember for sure that we did is that house-like 3-D model with a Rectangular Prism going through it. Coming from me I think it's a pretty good review for people who really didn't quite get the house-like model with a cylinder going through it. The diagram kind of looked liked this...

(I hope I've got the right measurements..comment if I got them wrong.)

We had to find the SA(surface area) for this 3-D model, another thing is that the measurements of the width and height of the rectangular prism on the inside doesn't matter on whatever order it is, and finally I'm going to try to give you the correct way to do it.(I hope) oh, and to this point I'm just gonna draw and upload the pics because I'm getting REALLY tired of even thinking of doing this all in paint so....here you go.

I know, I know very dark...bare with me please..oh and you can't see it here but each are 2.

If it's too dark to see, the answer I got was =738.15 and also, to find the roof the formula is 1 Roof= (hyp)L. (kind of cut it off)

And that's what I think it is...comment if I'm wrong and sorry if I am.

Now that was the first bit of review and like I said, I'm no robot so I'm not going to post up the other homework questions...

Reviewing took up most of the class so there wasn't much time for a bunch of stuff to go home for h.w but we did get one thing...and this one is going to be done in paint.(Hooray~)

(oh and the radius for the pool is r=3
We had to solve this problem for H.W and the problem' question was...
Problem: 800ml of fertilizer costs $29.95, it covers 20m 2 (squared) of grass. How much will it cost to fertilize the lawn.
So what I'm thinking is obviously find out what the SA of the grass is.

Well I guess that's it...!!! Almost forgot, test tomorrow= STUDY I know I will..and don't forget the homework that's due for Monday like...
  • Mathlinks
  • Self Evaluation
  • Journal entries(circle, highlight, or box the best one so Mr.Backe knows what to read
  • Vocabulary words(complete)

And the next scribe is.....Brendan...Lucky...math test scribe...COMMENT!!
